College Essay Structure: What Is Logical Order?

It is often said that the simple things are best. But when you try and over analyse the subject or when you try and overwrite a theme or topic, you're not being successful. Fewer words can often be better than more words and simplicity always adds to the clarity of your writing. This applies very much to the college essay structure. It is simple. It is proven. It has been used for generations. It also is logical in that it follows a believable order and develops in such a way that the writing flows with the point being developed as the essay continues.

So yes the college essay structure is simple and can be described in four simple steps.

  • clearly define the problem
  • clearly define the solution
  • clearly describe the evidence
  • clearly wrap up your case

Now you'll note the use of the word clearly in each of the four steps or sections above. This is a key word. Any form of vague writing is unacceptable. If you get the college essay structure right and in a logical order, it is so much easier to create clear and unambiguous writing as a consequence.

What is the problem you are to discuss in your essay? This will be outlined in the introduction. It must be outlined in a clear fashion. The reader of your essay must be in no doubt whatsoever as to the issue the essay will discuss. Once you have clearly defined the problem in the introduction, the logical order kicks in. What must follow, as night follows day, is a clear definition of the solution to the problem you have just clearly defined.

So what is your solution? Mind you there could be more than one solution to this problem but in order to prove to the reader that your solution or solutions will in fact work, you need to clearly describe the evidence to support your claim. Again a logical order kicks in. You have defined the problem and the solution and you're going to substantiate your case; you are going to prove that your solution is definitely true and above board because of the evidence you now present.

And then we reach the final step in the logical order where you briefly and clearly write a summary of all that has gone before. In essay turns this is known as the conclusion. It neatly wraps up the case you have presented in the preceding paragraphs. It reinforces the point you have made and allows the reader to see the logic of your college essay structure.
