Semantic Role Labeling and Natural Language Processing - Essay Example

With the advent of information technology, the relationship between humans and computers has evolved to an extent where it is essential to ensure that computers are properly able to decipher and understand human languages. One of the many fields concerning the interaction between computers and humans is natural language processing.

Natural language processing is a discipline involving the combination of linguistics and computer science with regard to communication processes between computers and humans. One of the biggest obstacles that natural language processing seeks to overcome is to enable computers to properly associate meanings to human languages and input in order to derive an understanding of what the human is commanding the computer to do.

Natural language processing emerged as a field in the 1950’s and through its evolution, there are now several tasks associated with the field. One of these tasks is known as semantic role labeling and may also be referred to as shallow semantic parsing. Semantic role labeling is a process which involves the identification of the specific roles or associations joined with the verb or the predicate of a sentence. Thereby, specific roles are then allotted to the subjects or predicates of a sentence. To illustrate an example, the sentence, “Lisa taught Bill mathematics” can be used. The verb “taught” represents the action that Lisa is performing and classifies her with the role of “teacher”. Accordingly, mathematics is then classified as the subject being taught and is thus the ‘theme” of the sentence. Bill is classified as the “student” as he is being “taught” by Lisa.

The assigning of roles and semantic labeling is an important process enabling extracting meaning from a sentence. Hence, this is an important task performed in natural language processing and improving the interaction between humans and computers.
